What is Mindfulness?

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness has become a buzzword in today’s world… but what does this actually mean, why is it useful and how do we become more mindful within our everyday lives?

Firstly, mindfulness is the practise of bringing our attention to the present moment without passing judgement. By purposefully paying attention to the present, we become more aware of ourselves and of the world around us.

So, why is this useful?…

Building mindfulness practice in our day-to-day lives has been shown to have significant benefits for health and wellbeing. In a world of unlimited tasks and distractions, taking time out for yourself (even for just 10 minutes!), has never been more important. Switching off and taking time for ourselves can help us become more self-aware, feel calmer, less stressed and may even help us cope with difficult thoughts or feelings.

There are a number of popular mindfulness techniques including meditation, breath work, yoga practice, or simply going for a walk in nature. However, it is important to engage with mindfulness in whichever way works for you by doing what you enjoy most.

Beginning a mindfulness practice may feel a little daunting or uncomfortable at first. By building this habit of awareness and presence however, we help to create amazing benefits for ourselves.

Zennistoun Hub has developed a Mental Health Toolkit to help support our community on their mindfulness journey. Our toolkit is free and available to all via our website, and includes tips, techniques and short videos all focusing on mental health and wellbeing. One great way to get started is by trying out our body scan video below. This short video is a great way to engage in self-care and to begin your mindfulness journey!

Peace, love and light,

Helen
